Edward Penner was born in St. Catharines, Ontario, and grew up in Jordan Station, a small town nearby. He graduated from the University of Waterloo in 1986, with a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and a Computer Science option. Edward's career spanned 34 years in the financial services industry, working in technology, risk management, and product development. This included 20 years as a senior banking executive in Toronto, Canada, leading large teams and developing future leaders. During his career he learned valuable leadership lessons, and what it takes to bring about large-scale change in an organization. Upon his retirement in late 2019, he vowed to continue to put these skills to good use, helping children develop their literacy skills.
Edward always had a passion for the arts. In his early years he studied music, but later turned his attention to creative writing. He began studying this wonderful art form in 1994, and spent 20 years reading the best books he could find on writing, practicing his skills, and developing his own style and voice. He feels indebted to the many great authors who have written books on how to write. They have all shaped his technique, skills, and style.
In 2002, Edward noticed that his son was running out of exciting material to read. As a new reader, his son wanted action packed stories, that captured his imagination. At the same time, Edward was looking for ways to keep his son entertained on weekends. The young boy showed a great interest in history from his earliest days, so Edward took him to the local War of 1812 forts. These trips were a huge hit, and opened the doors to exciting locations and historical events. Edward used his trips to Fort George, Old Fort Erie, Fort Henry, and Old Fort Niagara in the state of New York, as the inspiration to write books for his son. His son loved the stories, and Edward vowed that when he retired he would develop them for publication. That dream has been fulfilled, and in 2022 The Legend of Black Eyed Bart was released.
The Legend of Black Eyed Bart, is a pirate-themed adventure written for young boys aged 6-9. It is a five-part series, released between May 2022 and the early part of 2023.
